A Democratic lawmaker on the House Intelligence Committee says in a new interview that who paid for an unverified dossier detailing President Trump’s alleged ties to Russia is less important than the accusations found in the report.
Rep. Eric Swalwell said on CNN Thursday that if the dossier’s allegation that Trump worked with the Russian government to swing the election in his favor is true, American has a “National security issue” at hand.
“I think it is important to understand who paid for the dossier, but I don’t think that’s as important as what’s alleged,” Swalwell told Wolf Blitzer. “
Swalwell continued, saying that it was “important” to get the question of who paid for the controversial dossier to be answered so that his committee can focus on the real issues brought up by the dossier.
“It’s important to get those questions out of the way, but I wish my colleagues in the majority were more concerned about corroborating or repudiating the serious allegations of the dossier.
Top figures in Clinton’s campaign, including campaign chair John Podesta and spokesman Brian Fallon have denied any knowledge of the campaign’s efforts to fund the creation of the dossier.
